How to Look After Your Handmade Shoes
We hope that you love your new, handmade shoes! To get the best out of your shoes, please follow the care instructions below for looking after leather, suede and patent leather footwear.
General Instructions
Always choose the right size of footwear to avoid changes in the shape of your shoes, divergence of the seams and/or cracks in the leather.
Wear shoes according to their purpose and seasonality.
Take care of your shoes immediately from purchase. Before wearing, wipe with a dry, soft cloth and treat with a water-repellant spray or solution if necessary.
Regularly apply any recommended products to the surfaces.
Genuine Leather
Wash with a soft cloth and soap, and never wash in a washing machine.
After drying, treat with a leather shoe cream by applying a thin layer and polish it with a brush or cloth.
If the outer layer of color is damaged, then apply that color to the damaged area from an aerosol can using a closely matching shade. It's always best to test any leather colour spray in an inconspicuous area first.
Natural Suede
For best results, try to avoid wearing your suede shoes in the rain.
Only clean your suede shoes when they are dry.
Suede can be revived by holding over a gentle steam, then brushing with a suede brush.
Suede shoes can get dusty - clean the surface with a light-haired brush, then wipe with a soapy solution and brush again with a damp, light fluffy brush before leaving to dry at room temperature for 10-12 hours. Finally, treat with a water-repellent agent.
An eraser or a suede brush can help remove any deep stains and grease deposits.
To avoid mold, never store your suede shoes in plastic bags.
Patent Leather
New patent leather shoes do not need to be cleaned, just wipe them with a flannel cloth.
To restore shine, you can periodically wipe your patent leather shoes with a damp cotton swab and a soft cloth.
Never clean patent leather with a brush, as this could cause scratches.
Periodically lubricate the patent surface of your shoes with glycerin and petroleum jelly to protect them from premature cracking caused by dryness or sand particles.
Patent shoes should be stored wrapped in paper, a cloth case or a bag. Do not store shoes where the temperature drops below zero, as the varnish surface may crack.
Patent shoes are not recommended to be worn daily, especially in bad weather. From dampness and street dirt, the shiny surface gradually fades and becomes covered with small micro-cracks.
Wool Textile and Textile
If the stain is minor and can be removed manually, the textile surface can be cleaned with a soft brush or cloth dipped in a detergent solution. Do not use compounds that contain chlorine.
In case of a strong and persistent stain, more intensive cleaning will be required. It can also be manual cleaning. We do not recommend machine washing, because it can lead to deformation of the shoes.
After cleaning, it is best to thoroughly rinse the top of the products and dry them in a well-ventilated room or on the balcony. For drying, you should not use a radiator or fireplaces. In order for the drying process to go faster, you can install special dryers in the shoes or tightly stuff dry napkins/paper.
We recommend using hydrophobic products that will help reduce staining and dampening of the footwear.
If you follow these simple care rules, textile footwear will delight you with beauty, comfort and practicality for a long time.
